Why prayer sometimes feels hard
We all know that salah is one of the most important parts of our faith. It is the first thing we will be asked about on the Day of Judgement. Yet, there are days when it feels harder than it should. Sometimes it's tiredness or being busy. Other times, if we're honest, we just feel distant and unmotivated.
Have you ever set the intention to pray on time but hours later realised you missed it? You might start to feel guilty and promise yourself that next time will be different. But without a clear plan, the same cycle repeats.
You are not alone in feeling this. Even the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would ask him for advice on how to stay consistent in acts of worship. The Prophet ﷺ reminded them that Allah loves deeds that are small but done regularly.
...and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little.
Sahih al-Bukhari∙6464
The power of starting small
One of the easiest mistakes to make is thinking you have to change everything at once. You tell yourself, from tomorrow I will never miss a prayer again, I will pray every sunnah, I will read pages of Quran each day. These are good intentions, but when you try to do everything in one go, it becomes overwhelming.
Instead, start with one focus. Maybe your goal this week is simply to pray Fajr on time every day. Once that becomes part of your routine, add another prayer, then another. This way, you build strength step by step.
Find your prayer spot
Where you pray can make a big difference to how much you look forward to it. If your prayer space is messy or noisy, it can be hard to focus. If you have a small corner of your home that you can keep clean, quiet, and ready for salah, it becomes a place you want to return to.
Try putting your prayer mat there permanently. Keep your Quran or a small book of duas nearby. Some people like to light a gentle scent before they pray to remind themselves it is a special moment. This is your space to disconnect from the world and reconnect with Allah.
Even the Prophet ﷺ would choose places of calm and stillness for worship. Before the revelation began, he would spend time in the Cave of Hira in deep reflection, away from the noise of Makkah.
Make wudu part of the habit
Often, the biggest hurdle to praying is not the prayer itself but starting the process. If you are already in wudu, it becomes easier to pray without delay. Try making wudu at certain points in the day like after a restroom break even if you are not about to pray immediately. It keeps you in a state of readiness.
Wudu is not just physical cleanliness. It is a spiritual refresh. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a believer makes wudu and washes their face, every sin committed with the eyes is washed away with the water. The same is true for the hands, feet, and other parts washed.
...will be washed away with the water or with the last drop of water with the result that he comes out pure from all sins.
Sahih Muslim∙244
Connect your prayer to real life moments
One way to build a habit is to attach it to something you already do. For example, if you get up for work at 6am, let that be your signal to wake up earlier for Fajr. If you take a lunch break at work, let it be a reminder for you to pray Dhuhr. Linking prayer to something fixed in your routine helps it become part of your daily rhythm.
You might even make certain duas after the same moments, like leaving the house, starting your car, or beginning work. These little acts of remembrance keep your heart connected to Allah throughout the day.
Prayer is you are speaking to Allah
It's easy to let prayer become mechanical. You stand, you bow, you prostrate but your mind is somewhere else. Salah is not just movement but a meeting. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a servant stands to pray, Allah turns His Face towards him.
When a man stands up to perform prayer, Allah turns His Face towards him until he turns away...
Sunan Ibn Majah∙1023
Before you start, take a moment to remind yourself who you are about to speak to. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. Do not scold yourself. Just return to the words and their meaning.
Remember that you are not just reciting Surah Al-Fatihah but you are saying, Guide us to the straight path. You are not just bowing but you are humbling yourself before the One who created you. Learn more on what each word in your prayer means.
Be patient with yourself
Some days will feel easy and light. Others will feel heavy. That is normal. Faith has highs and lows. The Prophet ﷺ said,
...and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little.
Tabarani
So ask Allah to renew the faith in your hearts. When you have a low day, do not see it as failure. See it as part of the journey. If you miss a prayer, pray it as soon as you remember. If you get distracted in salah, try again the next time.
Allah does not expect perfection from you, but He loves that you keep returning to Him.
Let prayer be your anchor
Life will always have moments of stress, sadness, and uncertainty. The Quran says,
And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is a burden except for the humble—Al-Baqarah (The Cow)∙2:45
Your prayer can be the calm in the storm, the reminder that no matter what is happening, Allah is in control. Even if you are in the middle of the hardest moment of your life, those minutes in prayer are yours. It is where you can put everything down and know that you are being heard.
Your prayer habit starts with one step
You do not have to wait for the perfect time to start. You do not need to have everything figured out. Just take the next step. Allah is always listening and always ready to welcome you back.
Salah is not only an obligation. It is a gift. A gift you can open five times a day, wherever you are, whatever you are going through. Start small. Stay steady and let it transform you.
